Beaches Within Walking Distance to Cascais Center and Train Station

Also known as the town beach, it's a lively spot perfect for families and those looking to immerse themselves in the local atmosphere, with plenty of amenities nearby. There's usually a spirited foot volley game rockin' and plenty of locals and tourists dipping into the water. This beach is planted directly in the Cascais historic center and makes an easy stop for those walking through or staying in nearby hotels.

A short walk further into town, just past Cascais Marina, you will pass over a stone bridge that looks out toward the Santa Marta Lighthouse (Farol de Santa Marta) and Casa de Santa Maria. Underneath the bridge and leading behind to the Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães you'll find a little beach popular during low tide. During high tide, you can swim under the bridge and out toward the lighthouse, and you may even see teenagers jumping off the bridge into the water.

As you leave the historic center and head west, you'll encounter many beaches along the coastal walk called the paredão that we call pocket beaches. This is because they are sometimes just a pocket of sand barely separated from the next pocket of sand. But they all have their own identities and charms, to be sure.

The first pocket beach you'll pass is small but regal. Located in the heart of Cascais just past the main shopping path, Praia da Rainha, or the Queen's Beach, is a picturesque spot surrounded by cliffs. It was known as the private beach of Queen Amélia, making it a popular destination throughout history. Its intimate setting and crystal clear waters are perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. My kids love to hunt crabs in the large rock formations jutting out of the sea at the shore.

Keep walking west, and you'll come to the start of the paredão, the waterfront walkway that extends from Cascais to Estoril. Just a stone's throw from Cascais center, this beach is beloved for its accessibility and lively vibe, with plenty of amenities and water sports on offer. This is our go-to beach with our young children. The water quality is great with its calm sea waters.

Our favorite is when the vendors pass by yelling "bolas de berlim" selling their yummy donut-style pastries filled with flavored creams like Nutella and Kinder. We'll take two!

They also have a really fun inflatable water playground and obstacle course in the summer months. The attendants paddleboard the kids out, and they can play for an hour. It’s fantastic, and you can get a little break from the kids while they yuck it up in the water, parent-free!

Just next door to Praia de Conceição, Duquesa beach is a favorite among locals and visitors. Praia da Duquesa boasts fine sands and calm waters, flanked by elegant mansions that add to its majestic beauty.

Walk a bit further down the paredão and you'll come to this small, charming Cascais beach known for its calm waters and quaint atmosphere, perfect for a serene beach day. This is where you'll find one of our favorite paredão restaurants, Azimut, where you can eat fresh fish while staring out at the small beach. It's small size doesn't hinder it's ability to deliver a great place to enjoy the best of the summer season.

Easily accessible from the Estoril train station or by continuing down the paredão, Praia do Tamariz is famous for its lively ambiance, historic fort, and vibrant nightlife. Sunbathing in front of the gorgeous Forte da Cruz is a special experience and should not be missed!

Renowned for its calm waters and scenic beauty, Praia da Poça is a family-friendly beach that's perfect for swimming and relaxing. It's also within walking distance of several restaurants and grocery stores if you're staying in the area.

Tucked away at the bottom of cliffs, this secluded beach is a peaceful spot for sunbathers and swimmers, offering a quiet refuge. It's also the last beach on the beachside walk that starts in the centre of Cascais and ends here. Popular with yogis and open water swimmers, theres a staircase that takes you to street level. This is where the hubs and I turn around when we do our weekly (ish) beach walks.

It's almost exactly 2.5km from Praia da Conceição making it about a 5km roundtrip walk. Not too shabby to walk 5 kilometers along the beach to start your day!

If you’re wlling to go a little further, there are several more picturesque beaches available to you. The coastline from Cascais to Lisbon, often referred to as the Portuguese Riviera, has some of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal, so don't limit yourself to Cascais alone.
