Another fantastic option for those short on time is Adega Belém—Lisbon’s only urban vineyard!

It’s located in the Belém neighborhood near the MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology).  

This cute, rustic winery was founded by Catarina and David in 2019 in an old car repair shop. The couple is usually on hand to welcome visitors, making for a super personal and authentic experience.

It’s best to book in advance for a tour and tasting. And don’t forget to pick up a bottle or two—production is so small, you won’t find these wines outside of Portugal!

3. Quinta do Gradil

One hour north of Lisbon is the stunning Quinta do Gradil. The earliest reference to the property dates back to 1492, making it one of the oldest wineries in the region!

For many years it was owned by the Pombal family who helped rebuild Lisbon after a devastating earthquake.

Just around the corner (alright, a 20 minute drive) is another top Portuguese winery, Julia Kemper Wines.

Julia was a lawyer from Lisbon who became a winemaker overnight after her father passed away and she inherited the family winery.

The really cool thing is that the Melo family has been making wines here for over 400 years! And everything is made organically, with a real respect for Mother Earth.

Live like royalty for the day at Quinta da Bacalhôa, a winery set in a 15th-century palace!

The property was bought and restored by a wealthy American woman, Orlena Scoville, in 1936, and it is now classified as a National Monument.

It’s also just one hour from Lisbon, making it perfect for a day trip!

At the center of the estate is their iconic white tower, built in the 15th century as a symbol of military power.

They’re big on sustainability here; they converted all of their vines to organic farming in 2019. And they’ve also planted 189 different grape varieties to see which copes best with climate change.

This one’s for the lovers! L’and Vineyards is both a winery and a five-star luxury retreat located just 45 minutes by car from Lisbon International Airport.

Graham’s is one of the oldest and classiest Port producers, and it’s also a pretty awesome place to visit! 

You’ll need to make an appointment to get access, but it’s well worth it to ogle at the ancient barrels and swanky grounds.

After the tour you’ll get to taste a red and a white Port, and there’s even a grape juice and cookies option for the kids!

14. Churchill’s Lodge

Port can have a bit of a stuffy image, and that’s why Johnny Graham set up Churchill’s Lodge in 1981. At the time it was the first new Port house to be opened in over 50 years!

Today Johnny is still in charge, along with the latest generation of the family.

Tastings and tours are available daily, or you can simply sip on one of their famous Port wines in the sunny garden overlooking the river.

Don’t miss their impressive cellar which holds every vintage from the last 40 years!

15. Sandeman Cellars

Sandeman is another fun option for families. The tour is led by the famous caped Sandeman Don himself—or at least a guide dressed as him!

Visitors can choose between five different tour options. You’ll get to explore the 200-year-old wine cellars, and they’ve thoughtfully provided some extra capes and hats for the kids to try on.

If it’s sunny out, don’t miss unwinding after the tour on the waterfront terrace in front of the building.

As well as the obligatory tour and tasting of their delicious wines, you can keep busy exploring the three hiking trails on the estate. Staff can even arrange a picnic lunch to enjoy amongst the vines.

The focus here is on Mother Nature—there are no chemicals used in the vineyards, and the grapes must be picked by hand due to the super steep slopes.

Once in the winery, the grapes are trodden by foot, the traditional method used in the Douro, in big granite troughs called “lagares”!
